Top 5 Songs Based on a Fictional Character
October 2nd, 2008 by Karen
Sometimes a writer is inspired enough to create an interesting, timeless, and lovable character to win the hearts of readers everywhere.
And then sometimes that character inspires a song-writer to pay musical tribute. Here are my top favorite songs based on famous fictional characters.
5) Fett’s Vette
Not being a very hard-core Star Wars fan, however, many of the smaller allusions to Fett’s story makes it hard for me to follow a long, and so harder for me to list it any higher than #5. #4, however…
4) Wassup Holmes.
An easy joke? Yes. But you can’t hate it just because you’re jealous that you didn’t think of it first. It’s a solid 4. But now? Let’s go.
3) Captain Picard
Try not getting this one stuck in your head. I dare you.
2) The Ultimate Showdown
Does this count? I don’t know. But I love it regardless.
1) The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins
If you thought I wouldn’t include this one you’re crazy. I mean, just look at it. Leonard Nimoy and a bunch of crazy dancing girls. Beauty.
And as a bonus, check this out. That’s what I get for looking for Picard songs.

Great post! I’m pretty obsessed with net culture so I’ve heard a lot of these songs before. Ultimate Showdown (and the band behind it, Lemon Demon) is one of my favorites. I first heard Picard’s song on YTMND.com
As for Bilbo, maybe it’s my relative youth but I think I prefer Flight of the Conchords “Frodo, Don’t Wear the Ring.”
Excellent post due! Excellent.

Gotten a lot of airplay, these have? I’ve only heard 2 of them – one I have on vinyl and the other was on teh internets.
Where the hell is ‘Snoopy and the Red Baron’ or its xmas sequel? ‘Charlie Brown’? ‘Black Blade’? ‘Arthur’s Theme’? (yeah, technically theme songs shouldn’t count, but this one was actually on the Billboard charts not just some damp corner of the interweb) ‘Doctor in Distress’? ‘Dalek I Love You’? ‘Nosferatu’? ‘King of Pain’? ‘Star Trekkin’?
This list could use some work
What about Pac-Man Fever?
has anyone ever heard of Springsteen’s the Ghost of Tom Joad?!!!????? Shit.
Is Pinball Wizard not about a fictional character?
Its a shame that The Ghost of Tom Joad is not on this.
Harvey Danger has a great song called “Carlotta Valdez” about the dead woman that Jimmy Stewart’s character wants Kim Novak’s character to impersonate in the movie “Vertigo”. The album is “Where Have All the Merrymakers Gone?”
Whoa, whoa, whoa.
What about Tom Joad?
WHERE IS SERGEANT PEPPER????
Someone ruined Fette’s Vett by Mc Chris. WTH
Wow… Nimoy claims that he just was trying to support his family, but seriously…
LOL!!!!!!! jean luc..picard…..makeitso makeitso. i failed. it’s in my head. http://www.soundsbox.com/artist.php?a=xx&aff=200 i got the Flight of the Concord’s Frodo song here. LOL. Great list!!!
I know, I know. These are just my 5 favs, I could never assemble them all (without crashing someone’s browser – and it’d be even harder to rank them)
this should be mentioned
in case no one else has seen it.

LOL. I forgot to put this in my comment before, but we shouldn’t forgot the awesome “One Winged Angel” from Final Fantasy VII
Here’s a performance of the work: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5st0b3ln5U
Best work to feature an orchestra, rock band, choir, and Latin.
