Yeeeah… am I the only one who thinks that she was acting more unprofessional than her sidekicks? She was being very disrespectful to the producers, even calling them out. She should have aired her grievances with them personally, not on the air. I agree with her point–I’m sick of Paris, too, but come on… that was childish.

The report looks like its just been set up to look like they care about responsible journalism, when its more likely the big wigs of the company got together and decided that was going to take place. She probably wouldn’t have done by herself as it would have put her job and reputation at risk.

Of course this was heavily scripted and planned, and very well done - the show got global atttention for several days. Expect to see a lot more of these planned and scripted instances in the future, as different shows try to boost their ratings.

I don’t know, I got the impression that she might have already done that, to no avail. Even if she hadn’t explicitly said “if you lead with this story, I’m going to crack,” the producers were probably at least aware that she felt this story wasn’t newsworthy.

Also, if her outburst makes a news station or two take stock and cut back on the Hilton stories, then she has helped raise the level of journalistic discourse in the country. If a journalist’s profession is to bring news that matters to the people, what’s more professional than getting fluff news replaced with something more important.

What wasn’t impartial about that? She didn’t say Paris was good or bad, just that the story wasn’t important. Journalists HAVE TO make decisions abotu what is and isn’t important, otherwise everything that happens in the entire world has equal claim to being on the news. Well, that might not have been the best way to handle the situation, but I think she had a valid point. It’s pathetic that something like that was chosen as the top story. Obviously she had already expressed her opinion about it, seeing as the other two groaned when she mentioned it. They knew what was coming. Perhaps it was staged, perhaps not. I agree with her stand totally - she is a journalist and not a puppet. If they wanted a puppet they should not have hired her in the first place. They should have hired a politician.

My beef is with those two idiots either side of her - notice that they were the ones who have a dig at her at the beginning, and yet they are the ones who back off and follow the producer first. At least she isn’t echoing the voices in her ear.

My other point is that the argument seems to be within the format of the bulletin - very informal. They got what they wanted - controversy and a whole load of ratings.

14th website so far that I’ve stumbled on this story… and same comments on all, or at least much the same.

American media is driven by celebrity and the pursuit of happiness (i.e. money can buy it for you). Paris Hilton is the epitomy of the American dream, she is what most of you dream of becoming, rich, opinionated and naive.

The broadcast was faked to boost ratings for the channel and to drive even more publicity for that *****, which she is now enjoying… Evelyn Waugh said their is no such thing as negative publicity and she is just proving the point, and laughing on her way to the bank too.

Why do you do it? Why do you even discuss such a non-entity as her? The only conclusion I can come to is that in some strange retarded way you actually envy her and her wealth and her position and her sodding dog…. very sad.

Turn off the TV, turn off your phones for a few hours, spend time with your children, do something creative, cook, COOK a @#$% meal that does NOT include chucking something in a microwave or a calorie count that would feed an average european for a week and above all else get off your fat arses’ and walk rather than drive for a @#$!ing change.

I’m a Brit living in the US and the news here is a joke. Although it’s got lot better since the first time I was here.

A few years ago, while the Bosnia war raged in Europe, the lead news stories in the US were either President Clinton’s possible impeachment and the release of Keiko the @#$!ing whale!!

About this time 60 minutes ran a piece on the worthless fluff of US news. Since then it has improved but unfortunately in the media driven US entertainment will always trump news, especially on the networks.

I’ve gotta support Mika on this one–when a country’s at war, the war needs to be top priority, especially from any of the “major” media networks. If they hadn’t forced her to lead with the story, I don’t think she would have cared. Good for Mika if she couldn’t, in good conscience, report fluff as the lead. If it was staged, that’s fine too. Regardless, it made a point. There ARE more important things that should be reported.

And… just a side note… if she was insubordinate, all the better… bucking authority every once in a while to use your own brain instead of allowing others to think for you is a very good thing. More people ought to.

I actually tried watching this show this morning. It was the worst piece of crap I’ve seen on morning TV. That says a lot.

It’s on MSNBC. I think it’s intended to make The Today Show on NBC look like a real show.

So even if we’re all tools who secretly decide what goes on the news and the whole thing was staged, it’s still a very valid point. In a world that made ANY sense at all, no one would know who Paris Hilton is, much less broadcast her release from incarceration for a week straight.

And yes, the two guys are weenies. (I mean, they work at MSNBC. Come on.) And the guy on our right looks like Matthew Perry from Friends, a.k.a. Chandler.
