Okay, I found this completely hilarious. Completely, sadly hilarious:

Interesting, no wonder sometimes watching Hollywood movies I get the sense of : “hmm… this plot is really familiar, where have I seen this before…”

You could substitute HP with “Eragon” just as easily.

If you read Joseph Campbell and The Power of Myth, you’ll see this exact same story over the millenia…it can be cool or it can be a bit of a downer, just depends on yourpoint of view.

Harry Potter is at least good writing, and there are some pretty significant differences in the story.

If you want to read/watch a bad carbon copy of Star Wars, try Eragon.

It’s a nice thought and I sort of agree with the crossing out of information, but essentially, the story is about good v. evil. You can name thousands of books in literature as well as hundreds more films on screen that take inspiration from Biblical and other mythological forces to create lasting & impactful fiction.

So, essentially, not very impressed by this whole thing because you can do the same with several other books & stories.

  14. on 09 May 2007 at 9:55 am AMDZen

I agree with the guy that said this could be a sci-fi plot generator. BTW that synopsis is REALLY REALLY simple, and can be applied to any book. Basically, orphan meets person that knows about his past, then goes on an epic adventure discovering the book’s universe and engages in conflicts.

Hilariously, Star Wars can also be very effectively compared in this way to the movie “Sling Blade”. And yes, this is a standard Joseph Campbell mythology story repeated over and over in Hollywood.

  27. on 09 May 2007 at 3:07 pm Lyz

Amen, debbie – if you’re interested in this phenomonon and like thick college textbooks, “Hero with a Thousand Faces” is joseph Campbell’s examination of this “monomyth,” being the essentials of this story. Also see, as mentioned, Eragon (although the book is a little further a throw than the movie, the movie is almost painfully monomythic), Terry Goodkind’s work, Terry Brooks, Ed Friggin’ Greenwood’s Forgotten Realms stories/characters, Errol Flynn’s Sea Hawk, and hundreds/thousands of other works. Once you start to see it, you really pick up on it.

On top of which, JK Rowling (curr net worth > $1 billion) is on her way to making more than George Lucas (est $3.1 billion). Take that Steven Spielberg.

Great, you have a generic plot outline. You still have to develop characters, create meaningful dialogue, and make us care about the outcome, which is the actual difficult part of writing a novel or screenplay.

Writing and directing is alot like running a race. Everybody’s going in pretty much the same direction, but some people do it alot better than others.

  32. on 11 May 2007 at 9:16 am David Horn

add to that that Harry / Luke is mentored by an old, soon to be dead, wizard / jedi called Dumbledore / Yoda

  33. on 12 May 2007 at 7:29 am InCestusWeTrust

Not completely true but it is very hard to break away from the mono myth. Campbell’s research was pretty exhaustive but what parallels “Being John Malkovich” or “Goodbye Lenin! ” ?

  34. on 15 May 2007 at 11:46 pm BBlackmoor

Oh, please, not more drivel about Campbell. If you want a dose of reality, read a book by Georges Polti called The Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations. As for Star Wars, please note that George Lucas never once mentioned Campbell or “The hero’s journey” or any of that crap until well after Star Wars became a commercial success. Up to that point, he said over and over that it was based on Republic serials like Flash Gordon. All this “monomyth” blather came much, much later — like Darth Vader being Luke’s father.

you’re talking about the first harry potter movie, the plot of the book is another and there are 6 more books to HP. Besides you’re just pissy you didnt think of it first.

  47. on 21 Jul 2007 at 9:50 am JC

Really interesting connection. However, in all of the 7 books, I would hardly call Quidditch a plot point. A sidenote, at most.

Besides, it’s a classic plot line that works for many, many books, fanfictions, movies, even songs can base their lyrics off of it. JK Rowling, much like Shakespeare, borrowed from the very best, and it works for them.

  48. on 21 Jul 2007 at 4:08 pm Michael R

Whoever wrote that is a genius. Who decides which books get press (Harry Potter) and which get censored? After all, censorship is becoming America’s favorite past-time. The US gov’t (and their corporate friends), already detain protesters, ban books like “America Deceived” from Amazon and Wikipedia, shut down Imus and fire 21-year tenured, BYU physics professor Steven Jones because he proved explosives, thermite in particular, took down the WTC buildings. Free Speech forever (especially for books).
Last link (before Google Books caves to pressure and drops the title):

[translation: I'm going to make a poor transition from this comical post to my political views. I apparently see nothing wrong with that.]

This is exactly what I have been trying to tell my kids. Harry Potter is nothing more than Star Wars dressed up to look like wizards. Good for Jo she is making a killing at the box office.

  50. on 08 Aug 2007 at 4:57 pm sarai

    PrettyLame,

Hagrid did magic several times, including in the Philospher’s stone. It didn’t matter if he didn’t graduate or wasn’t particularly adept at it. He still did it, which makes him a wizard, not a squib or a muggle.

    Re the script, pretty funny/cool!

    The thing is…

It’s not about wizards or jedi’s or anything magical at all. The mythological quest to resque the kingdom or the universe isn’t that important either. Mythology is about the changes a hero undergoes in the story. Wizards, jedi’s and so on, are all part of the backstory and not essential to the journey of the hero.

Hello, I am a french girl but for my two favorite film I will do an effort :) I think Even if the two film are similar they are good inch one in his manner. Harry Potter is dfferent because int this film they can love, have possession etc. But Star wars is more a tragedie because if Anakin Have listen Padmé they will be safe … So if eveyyone love harry Potter and star wars it will be no problem or other things like that.

Vive Harry Potter et Star Wars pour toujours !!!!!

Merci d’avoir lu mon message :)

This general story applies to a lot of movies out there. But it is funny though to compare HP with Star Wars. Altough “Star Wars” is a masterpiece and HP isn’t.
