UPDATE: For those of you who said “rabbit”, you were correct! It is an English Angoran Rabbit, this particular award winner was raised by Betty Chu. Pretty strange huh?

What is this?

I received a similar picture in my e-mail today, and could only think “I have no idea what that silly looking thing is, but I want one!”

If you’re an avid web surfer (sounds like a sport, huh?), you probably already know the answer. I’ll post the source of this picture (with some other related links) later in the day tomorrow.

Cartoon Love – Nerd Style

As many of you know, I’m a bit of a nerd. I read some nerd books, I like nerd jokes, and used to have a nerdy job. Being a nerd, one of my favorite web comics is XKCD.

Randall Munroe, the genius behind XKCD, calls the site a “webcomic of romance, sarcasm, math, and language”. A logical mix indeed! He has a huge array of comics around love, so I’ve been waiting until Valentine’s Day to post my favorites:

Angular Momentum – by far, my favorite XKCD comic:

Useless – Finding a solution to mathematically explain love:

XKCD Useless

Grownups – if I wasn’t married, this would totally be me:

XKCD Grownups

If you’ve never seen XKCD (and particularly if you like nerd/tech humor), I suggest you visit his site. If he has other romance/love related posts that you like better, let us know!

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! 😉

You may need to turn up your volume to hear the newscast:

So the Boston bomb squad members are now riding Segways? Maybe budget cuts were one of the repercussions for mistaking Cartoon Network’s marketing ploy for a bomb threat.

This was our first, and possibly our last, “original” video. Feel free to poke fun at my beyond-cheesy script, and Ben’s video editing and photoshop skills. Whether you liked it or not, we’d love to know 😉

Wow, our Best Short Joke Contest received over 300 jokes! I just couldn’t cut my favorites list to less than 10 jokes, so rather than randomly picking a winner I figured I’d let you decide in a quick poll.

The person who submitted the joke with the most votes as of midnight on Thursday can choose between $25 or a super secret mystery prize. The people who submitted the top 5 jokes will also get special recognition.

Here are the jokes, pick your favorite then vote in the poll

1. What happened to the butcher who sat on his bacon slicer? He got behind with his orders!

2. What are seagulls that live by the bay? BAGELS

3. I was told that cow tongue is a delicacy, but I have a hard time tasting something that is tasting me back.

4. Two cows are standing in a field. The first one asks “Aren’t you worried about this mad cow disease?” The second one responds “It doesn’t worry me, I’m a duck”.

5. What do you call an Amish man with his hand in a horse’s butt? A mechanic.

6. Why do sharks live in salt water? Because pepper water would make them sneeze!

7. A skeleton walks into a bar and says “Give me a beer and a mop.”

8. It was so hot that I saw two trees fighting over a dog.

9. What’s the difference between roast beef and pea soup? Anyone can roast beef.

10. Guy comes home, yells to his wife, “Pack your bags! I just won the lottery!” “Where are we going?” she asks. “What do you mean ‘we’?” he says.

Amazing Illusion

True or false … in the picture below, squares A and B are the same color:

Checkerboard Illusion

Like me, you probably answered false, right? In fact, they’re actually the same! I didn’t believe it, and figured it was a joke or used some other trick … so I copied each square into Photoshop:

Checkerboard Illusion Comparison

Even now that I know they’re the same, I still can’t see it in the original picture no matter how hard I try. Thanks to Edward H. Adelson at MIT for creating this!

Now for another entry from the “you’ve got to be kidding me” news files. Over the past week, some areas of Mexico have received almost ten feet of snow! This is not a joke … here are pictures from a few suburban areas that were particularly hard hit by these freak snowstorms:

As a little kid, Mr. T seemed to be every boy’s hero. I had forgotten just how popular he was until I ran across Mr. T and Me, a website dedicated to chronicling the vast array of bizarre Mr. T memorabilia released over the years. I’ve included some of my favorites below.

Mr. T CrayonsMr. T School Quality Crayons

In addition to 8 regular colors, the 16 crayon set comes with Special Mr. T colors such as: “Right-on Red”, “Brotherhood Black”, and “Buckle Down Brown”. Maybe the “Learn-A-Lot Yellow” is what makes these School Quality?

This would have made the perfect gift for the kid who has “no time for the jibba-jabba” as Mr. T might say.

Mr. T Dancing HamsterClubber Lang Dancing Hamster

Rocky was no match for Clubber Lang at the beginning of Rocky III, probably because he didn’t train against the official Mr. T dancing hamster.

Not only does it sing “The Eye of the Tiger”, but it also squeeks Mr. T trademark insults such as “I pity the fool”, “Pain”, and “I am gonna bust you up”. Tough words from a goatee’d hamster in boxers.

If there was ever a sign that a celebrity’s career is over, the endorsement of a singing/dancing hamster would have to be it.

Mr. T CerealMr. T. Corn Cereal

Before you could Wake up with The King, Quaker Oats’ cereal made everyone excited to Wake Up with Mr. T.

I actually have vague memories of this cereal being halfway decent (my brother convinced my mom to buy this for him once). But then again, I also remember thinking Fruity Pebbles was the best invention ever, so this was probably equally horrid.

Mr. T. Cookie Jar Mr. T Cookie Jar
Huge Mr. T fans would have loved to get inside Mr. T’s head to learn what made him tick. Some kids already knew – Cookies!

Of all the Mr. T memorabilia, this has to be the scariest looking. I’d gladly meet Mr. T in a dark alley over this cookie jar!

Mr. T SlippersMr. T Fuzzy Slippers

Nothing says “Don’t mess with this Manly Man” like a pair of Mr. T fuzzy slippers. If someone doesn’t get the hint and gives you strange looks, shout a few Mr. T’isms, like “Don’t make me mad, Arrr!”

Now if you’d put the hamster inside one of these slippers, THAT would be intimidating!

And finally, thanks to Bunk Strutts for sending us this pic of Pee Wee Herman eating Mr. T cereal!

Can you get more 80’s than that?

Beware of Frogs

I’ve heard of guard dogs, but never guard frogs:

Giant Frog Sign
(thanks Delina!)

I’m not sure if this sign would pursuade me to turn around, or jump the fence to see these extraordinary frogs in action.

Sony has conceded defeat in the gadget wars, so to recoup some of their recent losses they have teamed up with Apple to create the amazing WalkPod:

Sony Apple Walkpod Off

One Sony USA Executive couldn’t contain himself when I asked him to share his perspective on the new cross-functional music platform:

We realize that the chic retro trend is here to stay, so what could be more appropriate than mixing a classic Sony Walkman with an Apple iPod? Now I can listen to my Belinda Carlisle tapes using the same gadget that my grandson bops to K-Fed. That’s totally wicked.

We also added this super neat read-ahead feature that allows listeners to save tapes to memory. This means that I can switch tapes without stopping the music! I realize this device will likely kill off our strong traditional Walkman sales, but sacrificing the division (and the intern who leads it) for front page press in prestigious newspapers and blogs seems worth the loss.

I was skeptical until he provided this picture of the Walkpod‘s read-ahead feature in action:

Sony Apple Walkpod On

Sony expects to sell “hundreds” of these devices within the first year, effectively doubling their music player sales. Sony is also planning other retro devices, such as the UHF tvPod (with a traditional black and white picture), and the Newton Betamax player.

Special thanks to Neil Wilkinson for these pictures. Since he doesn’t have a blog, Neil wanted me to give a nod to his brother’s band, Semion [MySpace].

This is quite possibly the silliest video ever. Great for 30 seconds of laughs:

Their use of subtitles is classic. Thanks to Miss Cellania for the video!
